...School Buildings, Health Centre, Homes Severely Damaged
The Executive Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Government, Hon. Odunnoiki Adetoye AbdulGaniyu, has expressed deep sympathy to residents of Iwopin Community following a devastating windstorm that wreaked havoc across the area in the early hours of Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
The violent storm left a trail of destruction, blowing off the roofs of several residential buildings and public facilities, with St. Peter's Anglican Primary School and the Primary Health Care Centre among the worst-hit institutions.
The incident also affected numerous private properties, leaving many families distressed and counting their losses.
Reacting to the unfortunate development, Hon. Odunnoiki described the disaster as a painful setback for the community, particularly because of its impact on educational and healthcare facilities that serve the people.
"I share in the grief and pains of our people in Iwopin and other affected neighbouring communities during this difficult period. Seeing homes, schools and public facilities damaged by strong winds is heartbreaking. The destruction of educational infrastructure is especially concerning because it directly affects the learning environment and future of our children," the Chairman stated.
He noted that while the damage to private properties is deeply saddening, especially considering the prevailing economic realities in the country, the local government remains committed to providing support and ensuring that affected residents receive the necessary assistance.
Hon. Odunnoiki assured the community that the Local Government has already commenced immediate assessment of the affected areas and will work closely with relevant agencies to facilitate prompt intervention.
"Government is fully on top of the situation. We have directed the relevant departments to carry out a comprehensive assessment of the damage, particularly at St. Peter's Anglican Primary School and the Primary Health Care Centre, to enable urgent remedial actions. We will also collaborate with the Ogun State Government and other relevant agencies to secure relief materials and reconstruction support for affected families and public institutions without delay," he added.
The Chairman further appealed to residents to remain calm, vigilant and cooperative with officials conducting the damage assessment exercise.
He also urged members of the public to observe necessary safety precautions as the rainy and windy season intensifies.
Also speaking on the incident, the Acting Head of Local Government Administration, Mrs. Adeyemo Nurat Taiwo, expressed heartfelt sympathy to the affected residents, teachers, pupils and healthcare workers.
She particularly empathized with the students and teaching staff whose academic activities have been disrupted by the disaster, offering prayers for divine comfort and strength for all those affected.
"As a mother, my heart goes out to the pupils, teachers and families affected by this unfortunate incident. I pray that Almighty God grants them comfort, relief and the strength to overcome this challenging moment," she said.
Meanwhile, community leaders and residents of Iwopin have commended the prompt response of the Local Government Chairman, expressing confidence that the promised government intervention will help alleviate the hardship caused by the disaster and restore normalcy to the community.
